Booming Solar Energy Market in INDIA
IST E-Magazine | December, 2016

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today gave its approval for stepping up of India's solar power capacity target under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) by five times, reaching 1,00,000 MW by 2022. The target will principally comprise of 40 GW Rooftop and 60 GW through Large and Medium Scale Grid Connected Solar Power Projects. With this ambitious target, India will become one of the largest Green Energy producers in the world.

But, Consumer awareness about the RTPV and its market acceptance is the most significant challenge in promoting solar energy, which is having a social bias. In a developing country affordability in    residential sector is much lower than in an advanced country, where 60 - 70% use of RTPV is growing in residential sector.

The newly set target of 40 GW Solar Rooftop PV (SRPV) deployments by 2022 will change the position of India on the map of solar powered nations across the world. The country has around 337 million houses as per the census 2011. A 1 kW system per house could add up to 337 GW of installed capacity; commercial and industrial rooftop space being additional avenue for generation which signifies that the 40 GW target is very much achievable and not over ambitious. A large potential is available for generating solar power using unutilized space on rooftops in buildings and huts.
