Solar Net Metering in India

Net metering is a billing method that credits solar system owners for electricity exported onto the electricity grid. Under the simplest form of net metering, a utility customer’s billing meter runs backward as solar electricity is generated and exported to the electricity grid, and forward as electricity is consumed from the grid. At the end of a billing period, the customer receives a bill for net electricity, which is the amount of electricity consumed minus the amount of electricity produced and exported by the utility customer’s photovoltaic (PV) system. This policy allows PV system owners to offset electricity purchases from the utility with every kilowatt-hour of solar electricity a PV system produces.

The policies in this differ a lot from region to region. There are two main benefits of net metering:

1. Feed Extra in to Grid: Whatever extra energy you produce, can be fed into the grid. This basically is significantly important because it allows you to bypass using battery bank to store energy that you dont consume for later. Batteries are expensive with high maintenance, net metering allows for a significant reduction in cost savings.

 2. Switch to Grid when you use extra: Imagine that you have your own way of producing electricity; maybe a diesel genset or solar panels and one day you need extra electricity to power your new air-conditioner, but your generated electricity isnt enough. Net metering will allow you to take electricity that you are not able to cover from your system with grid electricity.

Ideally, net metering stands to benefit consumers substantially. Not only will you be able to save money by cutting the cost of batteries but you might also earn money by feeding extra electricity into grid.

In India, no state has as of now rolled out net metering to a full extent.

1. Andhra Pradesh: NREDCAP/ APERC have policies to provide residential roof top net metering along with incentives. Govt. of AP also gives an additional subsidy on top of MNRE subsidy.

2. Gujrat: State Agency; GEDA is preparing to roll out net metering state wide in Gujrat.

3. Tamilnadu: TANGEDCO, has brought a commission for solar energy policy. However, net metering is yet to be adopted.

Get A Job In Solar Energy

India needs to shift to non-polluting sources of energy.

Do Your Research

It’s an exciting time to break into the solar industry, but without the proper preparation, you might miss out on some key opportunities. Certain job fields are more abundant in specific areas, and some individuals qualify for subsidized training, so be sure to examine the offerings that are out there before deciding on a path. The solar industry employs more than just installers.

Opportunities also abound in project development, sales and distribution, manufacturing, and other job functions. Consider your background and your strengths to decide which area of the field is right for you.

Some states are more "solar friendly" than others. Government forced into utility prices, interconnection policies and state metering policies.
As there is a range of job functions supporting the solar energy industry, so is there a variety of training options. Be sure to thoroughly review the different course offerings to get the right training and credentials to match what you'd like to do.

Get the Training

The solar industry is growing fast. It became a competitive market, solar installers receive reams of resumes each week and you must find a way to differentiate yourself.

In the absence of significant college curriculum for those looking to enter the clean energy industry, Institute of Solar Technology are helping those just starting to think about their career path in solar industry.
The course relies heavily on the standardized curriculum and certification process developed to ensure a certain level of quality for hiring companies.

Get the Job

When you complete the training necessary to give you a start, finding a job is the next step.

Solar Careers in Marketing & Sales

One of the more high paying solar careers is sales. All products need to be sold – whether you are representing the manufacturer and selling to wholesalers, retailers and installers or are dealing directly with individuals who are interested in a solar installation – there is always a strong demand for capable sales people.
Obviously, a good salesman is knowledgeable about the products they sell as well as those of their competitors. A great place to begin to build a solid knowledge base regarding solar energy and the solar industry, get admission at IST training programme.

Solar Careers for Architects

More and more developers are incorporating solar energy into the overall designs – and with innovative new products such as solar lantern, solar street light, solar pump, solar charger for electrical equipment like torch, laptop etc, solar fan, solar indoor outdoor light and more and more ...

Additionally, there is a big market for adding solar technology on existing buildings – and typically a part of every review is to look at the structure and condition of the roof, especially on commercial sized projects.

This has given rise to the new position of Solar Operations Engineer. A Solar Operations Engineer is essentially an architect of new solar energy facilities. They design new solar systems, supervise and inspect the structures during construction, then test and monitor the new facilities.

Solar Installer

Installers are in high demand. Some of the positions that are currently in demand include:

Solar PV Installer for Rooftop - These are the people who install the photovoltaic (PV) solar panels into the roofs of residential and commercial homes and buildings.

Consulting & Design - solar consultants are in high demand as they provide valuable and independent advice regarding site selection, technology, equipment configuration, and sometimes also provide valuable information regarding sourcing of equipment, recommending installers and even advice regarding financing options.

We mentioned earlier your professional background is important and can be taken into consideration to enter the solar industry, so do not hesitate to mention it and putting it

Professional Continuity

Once obtained, a certification must be maintained and certified solar professionals have the responsibility not only to keep their status but their knowledge updated. The rectification usually asks professionals to take part in a learning process to enhance their skills, knowledge and abilities in the renewable energy field.

Sustainable Energy Future
India has tremendous energy needs and it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet those needs through traditional means of power generation.  Over 40% of rural Indian households don’t have electricity.

To secure its energy future, India urgently needs to design/implement innovative policies and mechanisms that promote increased use of abundant, sustainable, renewable resources.  All of India’s future energy demand could be met by utility-scale and rooftop PV, concentrated solar power, onshore and offshore wind, geothermal, and conventional hydro power. The Government of India has taken several measurable steps toward improving infrastructure and power reliability.
